The red kite is Wales’s favourite, and most spectacular bird. At Bwlch Nant y Arian Forestry Commsion centre south of Graig Wen in Ceredigion, they feed red kites every day (2pm in winter, 3pm in summer).
Yesterday we went to see this awesome site. Countless kites circle the area then dive and plunge to the feeding station viewed from across a lake. From the waymarked walks, there are massive views down wooded valleys towards the coast. At one point you get a breathtaking view of kites gliding below you and settling in the tree tops. Nant y Arian also has some excellent mountain bike trails and a great cafe.
We had venison burgers with cranberry relish, learnt the Welsh word for red kite (barcud) then took a scenic route home through the windswept and deserted Cambrian mountains. Vehicles passed in 10 mile stretch – one other Land Rover.
